Diffused= success

I successfully used "I" statements and had a calm conversation with my very agitated 8 year old just now. I suggested he go bang a stick on the ground in the back yard and get rid of his frustration about an AR test in a way that wouldn't hurt anything or anyone. I told him when he calmed down I would be happy to discuss the issue with him. Yeah SENG Discussion Group!

Another great success I have had, last fall, that I would like to share is in regards to perfectionism. For those that have the child who has to do everything over when one little thing isn't perfect, try this story. Somehow I pulled it out of the air in desperation:
I intentionally got exasperated as I was unloading the dishwasher, gaining his attention. I said oh no! I have to run the dishwasher all over again. One of the forks still has food on it! The whole load is ruined and now we don't have dishes and silverware for dinner!  His brilliant logic came to play and said why don't you just wash that one fork, the rest is probably okay.  I was then able to explain that his test or homework was probably okay too.

Happy Parenting everyone!
